The history of this international airport dates back to the early 20th century. In 1924, an aeroplane was launched from this airport for the first time. Then passengers were transported to their destination on the route «Tashkent - Bishkek - Alma-Ata». Later that year, the plane carried about 1,000 passengers, 200 kilograms of mail and another five tonnes of cargo.
On 25 January 2017, the name of the First President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov was given.
Tashkent Islam Karimov International Airport is one of the most modern and largest airports in Uzbekistan. Another of its great achievements is that the airport has established air links with almost all major and commercial cities of the world and is capable of receiving any type of aircraft. The current capacity of the airport reaches 1,300 passengers per hour and is IKAO Category II.
Uzbekistan Airports Joint Stock Company was established on 15 August 2019 on the basis of «Uzbekistan Havo Yollari» NJSC by the decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
«Uzbekistan Airports Cargo» Limited Liability Company was established in 2021. An enterprise engaged in cargo servicing and handling as part of «Uzbekistan Airports» JSC.
